What are file extensions?

A file extension is used by many software manufacturers to tag files so they work with their own particular program. Windows needs this extension in order to load up the right software and open the file. Many extensions give hints to what type of file it is – for example, if you open notepad and save a file it will be saved as a .txt file (short for plain text). Another example is for programs that are executable (.exe).

Many file extensions you will be familiar with but with new products being released every day with all different types of extensions it can be a real mine field keeping up to speed, in fact with hundreds of extensions it is impossible to have all the software needed – that’s where FileCure comes in.

This handy software utility tool automatically scans your computer for all unopened or locked files.
